Science Olympiad is a K-12 science enriching program. There are three levels of competition, K-5, middle school (division B), and high school (division C). Each school based team is allowed 15 students who cross-train for a variety of events from physical science to chemistry to physics.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 events in each division. Each year a portion of the events rotate to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. Emphasis is placed on cooperative, hands-on group participation.

In Wisconsin there are several competitions throughout the state for both high school and middle school level teams. There also are several regional competitions throughout the state and a state competition for both high school and middle school. Lastly, there is a national tournament with one to two representative schools from each division and state.

Stanley Boyd has been fortunate enough to have Science Olympiad in the middle school for more than 25 years. The program has grown the last few years from 6-8 participants to nearly 30. The success of the middle school program has also grown the last couple of years. In 2012, the middle school program finished 3rd in the small school division at the state competition. In 2013, the program finished 3rd at the regional competition and 4th in the small school division at the state competition. In 2014, the team again finished 3rd at the Western Wisconsin regional. Over the past three years, the team has had numerous students earn medals and ribbons at both the regional and state competition.

The middle school program is open to anyone grades 6-8. The team practices Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30. Practice usual starts the beginning of October and concludes at the end of March after the state competition. Currently there are two teams. One team for students who wish to be very competitive in the Science Olympiad competitions and another team for students who wish to explore what Science Olympiad is all about.
